The title and heading formatting for APA 6 is very difficult to read. Also, the requirement for a running head at the top of each and every page interferes with the readability and usefulness of section headings. These are the two main areas that Pepper 799 intentionally deviates from the standard.
The alignment, indention, and size of the titles and headings remain the same throughout. The new heading styles get rid of the periods (formerly H3, H4, and H5) which seemed to collide with the normal paragraph text. Underline is now used for title and H1 (the section headings in Pepper 799), and also for H5 (used very sparingly when there is a need to interrupt the narrative in a new and surprising way). Italicization is still used, but only in H4 and H5. Thus, the progression from H1-H5 is "smoother".
